9-30-13 - Remaining OMPET Budget Needs - $21,501.09. The OMPET Volunteers
have done an outstanding job at raising funds for the fiscal year beginning 3-15-13. Our "break even"
budget need for the year is $129,960. We have hosted more fundraisers than one would think were possible,
and have written numerous grant applications. All requests for financial support except one have been
granted, so we are on a roll!
9-15-13 - Charlotte Montgomery Humane Trust Donates $15,000 to O'Malley PET - Without this local
benefactor, O'Malley PET would be in a different place, one that definitely isn't quite as good :). Montgomery Trust
has donated $35,000 to our project this year, and those funds have been used to pay clinic fees for those who qualify for
free services based on current HHS poverty guidelines. Almost 200 surgeries have been funded with these monies so far.
We love Montgomery Trust -- a lot.
9-10-13 - O'Malley PET Hosts Health Department Approved Training Seminar for Animal Control Officers at
Ellen Trout Zoo in Lufkin - Together with Kurth Memorial Animal
Shelter, OMPET hosted its second annual Euthanasia
Training Seminar. Maggie Forbes and Betty Yuracko coordinated sign-in, Maggie provided breakfast, and lunch was provided
by the legendary Wanda Jorgenson and her Bakettes Judy Mahoney and Jane Austin. Shelter Supervisor Aaron Ramsey and Debbie
Jones hosted the practical learning session at the end of the day. The seminar provided required 6-8 hours of
required continuing education for Texas Animal Control Officers, and proceeds provided O'Malley PET volunteers with new
uniforms. The seminar room was donated by Ellen Trout Zoo.
September 2013 - Our Secret Weapon is at it again! Nearly $1000 raised for the Rex and Sammy Fund
through Bake Sales - Wanda Jorgenson and her Bakettes spent the month on two more "Not Your Average Bake Sales."
The first took place at PetSense on September 7, at the annual National Adoptathon. The second was at the
Fall Nacogdoches Farmer's Market Spring Fling on September 21. Rumor has it that Jane Austin's Legendary Pound
Cake was sold twice -- the first buyer donated it back to the table, and sold it again for $30! We raised nearly $1000
for the Rex and Sammy Fund which supports spay-neuter for those that have
special medical needs, requiring extra medical care before, during and after surgery.
8-31-13 - Jennifer Bryant Joins OMPET as Veterinary Technician -
We are so blessed to be joined by Jennifer Bryant, our first paid support staff person. Jennifer has many years
experience, and has a heart for serving others. She is perfect for us! She is pictured here with her husband Steve
who is an Animal Control Officer at Nacogdoches Animal Services, and her two children Gabriel and Hannah.
8-24-13 Daily Sentinel - Nacogdoches
Mourns Loss of Charles Bright - Upon the loss of Lois, his wife of 39 years, Mr. Bright created
a Memorial Fund in her honor funded by the sale of her jewelry and beloved Jaguar. Those funds were
donated to the Humane Society of Nacogdoches County (HSNC) upon Mrs. Bright's death due to ALS (Lou
Gehrig's Disease) in 2009. HSNC in turn gifted a portion of that money (approximately $10,000) to
SpayNeuterNac for the purchases of needed clinic equipment -- machines to perform pre-anesthetic
bloodwork, diagnostic sets to examine eyes and ears, and machines to clean surgical instruments prior to
sterilization. Eight months after SpayNeuterNac was closed by the City of Nacogdoches, O'Malley PET
purchased the SpayNeuterNac equipment from HSNC for use at O'Malley House. At that time, we became the
proud owners of Mr. Bright's loving gift made in Memory of Lois.
8-16-15 Mount Pleasant Daily
Tribune - Citizens
organize to support animal shelter - Dr. Blount
traveled to Mount Pleasant to speak to 30 community leaders on the importance of targeted spay-neuter to
reducing shelter intakes and euthanasias in East Texas communities. Mt Pleasant Police Chief Wayne
Isbell opened the meeting with an hour long presentation on "Where We Are Now." Mt Pleasant is indeed
fortunate to have a Police Chief so dedicated to animal welfare.
8-8-13 - Preceptor Carolina Salazar Joins
